Building a House - Step 2 - The Base House

Now that we have a door, let's build a house to go into!

To the left is the second model we will make - the base house. It is made using three Shape Magic objects: a side-wall, an end-wall and a roof half. Each of these are imported into your 3D program (like Bryce, Vue or Poser) then duplicated, rotated and sized as needed.

Step 2A - House Ends

To start, make the end wall. First create a Side View that looks like the following picture. The tricky part is setting the blue hollow dots to get the sharp edge on the overhang. Once the basic shape is defined, click on the blue letter S (at A) - that will cause the three hollow dots to form a straight line from top (T) to middle (M) to bottom (B). Then drag them as shown below. By having the middle dot below the bottom dot, you get a sharp edge. If you want a rounded edge, put the bottom dot on the bottom.

The Top View is a straight line made by clicking on the Polygon button (A) then dragging the blue dot to the number 2 (B).

Go to the Create File page, click on the Create button, then go to the Save File page. Enter the file name, and if not checked already, click on the three checkboxes: Group names, UV mapped and Front & Back polygons. (For Bryce, leave the Front & Back Polygons unchecked.)

Step 2B - Roof

Next let's make the roof. The Side View is a simple rectangle. Note that there is no Top or Bottom (set to zero). I used 16 segments for the middle section but you can use more or less (the more you use, the smoother the roof.).

The Top View is a 4-sided Polygon.


Now comes the tricky part. We need to make the roof curve so it matches the top of the end section made in Step 2A. I started at 60 degrees Curve Right/Left. After making the part, importing into Bryce, rotating and resizing, I saw it was not quite curved enough. I redid it at 65 degrees and it matched well. You may need more or less of a curve depending upon your end section.

Once you are happy with the curve, you will find that it is just a bent, square tube. You now need to resize it in one direction (in my case, the Z- direction) to make it look like a roof.

Step 2C - Side Walls

Finally, we'll make the side wall. The Top and Side Views are exactly the same as for Step 2B. We just need to curve them differently to match up with the lower part of the end wall made in Step 2A.

Here are the settings I used. There are two bends, one for the gentle curve in the Misdeal section (green dots on the Top View) and the other for the sharp lip near the overhang. Again, I did an initial guess at the settings, and then did a trial and error fit until I was satisfied.

As in Step 2B, this is just a square rod and needs to be expanded along one axis to make a long side wall.

Having trouble getting the curved wall to match? If so, just make the side wall straight or angled as shown below (Set Middle Section to 1 bezier segment (A) and move the bottom dot down (B).


Step 2D

The parts are now made and are ready to be imported into your 3D program. The parts have to be rotated, resized and positioned as needed. Once you get one end wall, one side wall and one roof section in place, duplicate them all and rotate 180 degrees so you have the other side
